Battery Park, New York City Departure:
Public transportation is recommended for visits to The Statue of Liberty from the New York Departure. Parking is limited. For more information regarding transportation visit www.mta.info.
By Subway
Local 1 to South Ferry, or Express 4 or 5 to Bowling Green, or R/W to Whitehall Street Station.

By Bus
M15 (East Side) South Ferry, or M6 (West Side) from 57th street.

By Car
FDR Drive South, Exit 1 South Ferry Battery Park from East Side. Westside Highway South (9A) until it dead ends from West Side.

By Bus
From Journal Square Terminal in Jersey City from Platform A3 take the Central Avenue Bus to Liberty State Park.

By Lightrail
Hudson-Bergen Lightrail train to Liberty State Park Station, there you can catch a shuttle to tickets offices.

By Car
From the New Jersey Turnpike take exit 14-B and follow the signs to Liberty State Park.

Security

Visitors to The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island undergo airport like screening before boarding the ferry. Please give yourself time for the wait. A second security checkpoint is required before entering the Statue of Liberty Monument.

There are no lockers at the departure points. Lockers are located on Liberty Island, although large bags are not permitted.

All weapons are prohibited.

Strollers, backpacks, and large umbrellas are not permitted on islands.

Food and drink are not allowed inside the monument. All Visitors can be searched.


Accessibility

Ferries and Liberty Island grounds are wheelchair accessible.

A Limited number of wheelchairs are available at both Liberty Island and Ellis Island on First Come, First Serve basis.

Only assisted animals are allowed on ferries and in parks. Visits to the observation pedestal requires ability to climb 24 stairs, elevators are available for the Ft. Wood Promenade area.

All buildings are handicapped accessible

Restrooms are available in the monument and in the concession area.

The information center has an assisted portable induction loop system.

Ranger-Guided ASL American Sign Langauage translation tours are available at both Liberty and Ellis Island. They are provided on scheduled intervals at both islands for free.

There are emergency medical services on both islands.

Parking is available at both departure points using official placards. Restrooms are available at both departures.


Park Programs

Liberty Island Activities:

Ranger-Guided Tours - 45 minute tours offered free of charge of the island's grounds. The tours explain the concept, construction and the restoration of the Statue of Liberty. The tour also explains the island's history and harbor. They are at regularly scheduled times through out the day. The program listings are posted at the islands' information building. (available on first come, first serve basis.)

Ranger-Guided tours of Liberty Island Offering ASL-American Sign Language translation are offered at scheduled times.

Junior Ranger Programs - are self paced activities that are documented in a book for both islands, Junior rangers will receive a badge upon completion.

Ellis Island Activities:

Ranger-Guided Tours - 45 minute tour offered free of charge exploring the island's history and the immigrant experience during its years in operation. Tours depart hourly from the information desk. The number of tours are offered based on daily staffing. Tickets are not required.

Documentary File: The 45 minute award winning documentary, "Island of Hope, Island of Tears" is shown in two theaters. Includes introduction by park ranger. Theaters seat 140 people. Tickets are not required. Check the information desk for more information.

Theatrical Program: A theatrical production based on immigrant accounts. Professional actors bring to life the immigrant experience at Ellis Island. The production is 30 minutes and offered Spring through Fall at scheduled intervals. Fee $6.00

Ferry Building Tour: One hours program documenting the restoration of the building in 2007. The exhibit, "Future in Balance: Immigration, Public Health and The Ellis Islands Hospitals" explores the United States Public Health Services. Visitors need to sign up for program, space limited. Tours are Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and some weekends at 11:30 AM and 2:30 PM.

Board of Special Inquiry Program: A living history program presented the actual accounts of immigrants hearings. The program is held in the "hearing room." Audience participation helps decide the fate of the immigrants. Visitors learn the importance of the immigration process at the turn of the century and today's current immigration law. Offered free at scheduled times starting mid-April, check information desk.

Genealogy Workshop: National Archives presents workshop for visitors that would like to research family immigration history. Offered on monthly basis March-October. Workshop is free to all visitors.
